Analyzing Learning Program Example

Aiming before you fire when developing or improving a learning program

Project Overview

A major pharmaceutical company desired to have assistance in improving their Ethics and Compliance curriculum in order to establish a formal process for releasing future enhancements and modifications to their growing curriculum. The project consisted of two distinct phases:

Phase 1

During this phase, ARI conducted an inventory of all available content. This included educational materials, internal memoranda, policy manuals, newsletters, and other forms of communication. The ARI curriculum expert reviewed the materials with the intention of providing an independent analysis of the completeness, effectiveness, and alignment of the content.

Phase 2

This phase involved application and implementation of new learning design standards identified and recommended during Phase 1 for the compliance certification program.

ARI Approach

ARI reviewed numerous aspects of the existing curriculum during this engagement. The following are specific examples of key findings.

User Interface Analysis

The materials reviewed included various user interface layouts, all with inconsistent use of elements in the learning environment. ARI recommended and produced an enhanced user interface design to incorporate overall consistency through navigational elements, job aids, and an introductory module to explain each element. The new design further supports overall modularity of content for future blending options and strong functionality.

Content Presentation

Our consultants reviewed materials with a keen eye toward improving the overall student learning experience. Using industry-proven techniques, ARI identified design and style adjustments to improve the page layout and presentation of content.

Overall Engagement of the Learner

The majority of the material reviewed, consisted primarily of narrative text and photographs. Through our research and experience, we understand that it is difficult to get full participation in on-line learning courses therefore interaction must occur.

Curriculum Overlap

Upon detailed review of the individual course offerings, ARI determined that there was a significant amount of content overlap. Our consultants prepared a detailed matrix that mapped each major topic for each online course to quickly identify areas of content overlap along with recommendations for consolidation of several courses.

Business Result

In response to the findings, ARI created a full recommendation for learning design standards, templates, and processes. The client and ARI are currently working together to redesign existing course materials and consolidate content areas where redundancy can be eliminated. The company is now better positioned to more readily blend course materials as a result of the consistency and redesign.
